Checking Horses: Dirt Bike Style

If you’ve been following our program you are probably aware of how important it is for us to check on every single horse every single day. No matter where on the property they are or how long it takes to find them — we will find them. But unless you have walked our property, or joined us on an excursion to find a certain horse, you may not have gotten to experience the full glory (beauty is in the eye of the beholder) of our slice of rugged prairie Heaven.

There are some places on our property that are just not a walk in the park, or even a bumpy drive down an off-road trail. That’s where we have had to get creative — and honestly, have a little fun with it.

While the Polaris Ranger handles a few of our rounds, the real MVPs are our dirt bikes. For the fellow moto fans, we mostly ride KTM 300s, but the odd trials bike might come out, too, for variety. The bikes are nimble enough and fast enough to reach bands of horses that hide out in the rockier corners of the property, places no other wheels can go. It may not be the image most people picture when they think of horse care, but for us, it’s just another tool in the toolbox.

It’s part of the rhythm of life out here: saddling up a dirt bike, bouncing across the prairie, and ticking each horse off the mental checklist. The dirt bikes make sure no horse stays unseen, no matter how far they roam.
